Over the holidays we closed the shop and I had time to relax a little. I always have to have something to do, and this year I spent time learning to draw on my new ipad. The result is this fun Mandala pattern which is perfect for stitching (or just colouring in!).
Since I don't have time at the moment to turn this into anything bigger I thought I would share it with you as a free pattern and I would love to see what you make from it. Will you put it into a quilt block, make a cushion or maybe a bag?
I am stitching mine up with a combination of Eleganza and Razzle perle 8 and Glamore 12 weight from Wonderfil threads. These are great threads to use as they stitch so nicely and don't have to be separated into strands. The background is Manchester cotton from Robert Kaufman, which has a great texture.
I'm sure this adventure will take me somewhere quilt-wise soon!

Today is the launch day for my Creative Grids Half Sixty Triangle ruler. I've been doing so much secret sewing, so I'm really excited to share these patterns with you and show you the ruler!
This ruler is a half equilateral triangle, so it's perfect for setting your triangle quilts. The measurements go up to 12 1/2" and are in divisions of 1/4". Grips on the back mean you won't be slipping when cutting your fabric. Creative Grids rulers are available in local quilt shops and in web stores.
Here's the demonstration video
With the Half Sixty ruler you can make any of these new patterns. Look out for both in your local quilt shop.
My patterns are also available for download in my Payhip store.
Arrows is fun to make with a collection of fat quarters. These lovely bright colours are from Jennifer Sampou's Chalk and Charcoal range. Backgrounds are Inkwell from Windham.
I bought a couple of fat quarter packs of Carolyn Friedlander's Instead range at Quilt Market. Together with gorgeous Essex Linens from Robert Kaufman they made this Hover quilt. You could make this in really soft, blendy colours or go with a similar colour range for someone special.
Do you love a big quilt with BIG blocks? Topsy is available for Queen or King sizes. Carl is so happy his feet won't be getting cold next winter!
This next quilt is called Slice it Up, and it really is as simple as that! Use up those layer cakes (10 inch square packs) that you have, now you finally have the excuse to go and buy that one you've been eyeing up. I used the stunning Gridwork range by Christa Watson from Benartex fabric.
Last but not least, have fun playing with the different shapes in this easy table runner, called Be a Mod. Violet Craft's Modern Classics range was perfect for this fresh colourway.
This Pinwheel Hexagons cot quilt is a Cut Loose Press pattern available from your local quilt shop. It also uses Violet Craft's Modern Classics and is quilted with 12 weight Spaghetti thread by Wonderfil.
This year I have designed two Mystery Quilts that will be starting in February 2020.
Both of these are pre-cut and ready to sew, and the registrations open this week - be quick as quantities are limited and many colourways sell out quickly!
The Name of the Rose
This is one of my classic Puzzle Mystery Quilts. You can sign up for this quilt from
The lovely Lisa runs the Puzzle Mystery in the UK so if you are in the UK or Europe this is a great option for you.
Trendsetters II
This is the Mystery that uses my triangle patchwork techniques. Available in limited numbers from my shop in New Zealand. There will also be a 'cut your own' option for purchase in my Payhip store nearer the launch date.
If you loved the quilt that I showed to Ricky Tims on The Quilt Show (with the Star Tips block, behind me in this photo) you can buy the pattern for this in my Payhip store. It is called Trendsetters. The instructions are for the general quilt layout but if you send me a note when you purchase I will send you the fabric requirements for the rainbow solids background fabrics.
I had a fabulous time at Quilt Market in Houston introducing my brand new Matariki Block of the Month pattern to shops.
I designed this quilt in two colourways - this one is called Spectrum, and it uses Violet Craft's Modern Classics fabrics from Robert Kaufman. What fun getting to pose with Violet for a photo!
The other colourway uses Jennifer Sampou's Chalk and Charcoal fabrics, also by Robert Kaufman. Jennifer happened to be in the booth right next to Violet, so I got photos with both of these lovely ladies!
This block of the month pattern is divided into ten parts. Each month includes the patterns for two blocks.
All of these are made with the Creative Grids CGR60 triangle ruler, using the techniques from my book Quilts with an Angle.
Month 1 includes all the instructions you need for cutting the shapes with this great ruler. You will learn to cut triangles, trapezoids, hexagons, diamonds and parallelograms, all using the triangle ruler plus a straight ruler.
The pattern booklets are complete separate items for each month, making it easy for shops to kit up the blocks with pattern and fabric.
At the moment the Matariki pattern set is only available wholesale, so ask your local quilt shop to get it!
This week I am in Denver to tape an episode of The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.
We took off from a beautiful sunny Wellington on Tuesday
By the time we reached Auckland the weather had gone downhill with roaring winds and sheets of rain ! At least we didn't have to take off till later when the storm had passed us by.
Denver put out a lovely welcome - with the time difference we took off after sunset on Tuesday and then landed before sunset on the same day
We spent a couple of days acclimatising and then visited The Quilt Show studio today to watch some of the taping and get set up for my filming tomorrow.
So now my quilts are up on the wall and ready for filming in the morning. I'm really looking forward to it, everyone was having so much fun today.
I had a lovely weekend teaching my Triangle Block Party class to the ladies of my local quilt guilt, Wairarapa Quilters. For the first time we stayed at Waimanaaki, a great venue at Riversdale Beach for groups to stay at.
Half of the class decided to make the Modern Triangle Sampler quilt, and half worked on smaller blocks to make a table runner. We soon had a full design wall.
The students did a fantastic job and worked hard all weekend as well as having lots of fun with beach-themed dressing up, quizzes and lots of eating!
Here's Rosie with her quilt blocks, trying to get everything in the picture
Adie made all these blocks in the two days
I loved Sue's use of Alison Glass Sunprints light for her backgrounds
Kattrina was using Karen Lewis Wayside fabric to make her runner
While Martina went for a bold modern look
We also designed a brand new block, especially for the Wairarapa Quilters
I love teaching this class and seeing my students realise how easy these blocks are to make!

Thank you to everyone who has been following the blog hop for Quilts with an Angle, and thank you to my fellow bloggers for all their work writing reviews.
I hope that you have learned some more about the book and my triangle grid patchwork technique.
If you haven't yet, do visit all of the blogs listed below to see what they have to say!
As you have seen, Quilts with an Angle is full of interesting projects to make, with 15 quilts in total. But not just that, I included lots of tips and techniques for piecing 60 degree shapes and also tables for cutting the different shapes with a triangle ruler - who knew you could cut a hexagon with just two cuts?
So whether you are a beginner, scared of triangles, or want to extend your techniques, there is something for you. I hope you enjoy the book and try some of the projects, and I would love to see what you make!
You can post photos of your work in my facebook group, Sheila Christensen's Triangle Quilters. Join here.
